How deck removal works

Send photos of the deck from the yard and from the house, plus the stairs. We send one price. On the day, we pull the boards, drop the railings, cut the joists, and cut the posts flush with the ground. Everything goes on the trailer sorted: treated lumber, clean wood, metal hardware.

We leave the ledger board on the house unless you tell us your contractor wants it off. Footings stay below grade. The footprint is raked clear.

Why decks come down here

Richmond humidity is hard on wood. A deck built in the nineties in Brandermill, Tuckahoe or Mechanicsville has often reached the point where the boards are soft, the railings wobble, and the inspector on a home sale flagged it. Contractors will charge for demo. We charge less and they start on a clean site.

Hot tubs on decks

A lot of decks have a hot tub on them. We take both in one visit. See the hot tub removal page and send photos of both.

Deck Removal questions

Can you take down an attached deck?

Yes. Send a photo of where the deck meets the house. We take the deck down to the ledger and leave the ledger in place unless your contractor wants it removed, so the house is not exposed.

How is deck debris priced?

By the deck. Send photos of the whole thing and the stairs and we send one price. Treated lumber and clean wood go to different piles at the county, and we sort them.

How long does it take?

A typical twelve-by-sixteen deck is half a day. Big multi-level decks can be a full day.

Do you need a permit?

Demolition of a deck generally does not require a permit in Richmond or the counties, but rebuilding one does. Check with your contractor if a new deck is going in.
